A Biodiversity Hotspot
The Rosebery-Bonanza-Summit Lake rail trail passes through a multitude of wildlife habitats and ecosystems. As trail users enjoy the Bonanza Creek and Summit Lake sections of the trail network, they will be passing through the ecologically rich Bonanza Biodiversity Corridor (BBC). The BBC covers 13,000 hectares of valley bottom, sub alpine and alpine terrain. There are over 40 tributaries feeding into the wetlands of Bonanza Creek, providing nutrients and water flow into Slocan Lake.
The BBC is recognized as a Community Nominated Priority Place for conservation by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Geographically the BBC is situated between a series of mountain ranges, valleys and watershed networks in the Upper Columbia Basin. The entire BBC is considered a wildlife corridor, with species movement from outside the boundaries of the corridor and within its varied terrain.
