Seasonal and Temporary Closures

The Rosebery Bonanza Summit Trail Alliance (RBSTA) has developed a Trail Closure Directive in accordance with the Rec Sites and Trails BC approved Trail Management Plan. The purpose of this directive is to inform trail users about seasonal trail closures to protect sensitive species when they are migrating through the rail trail corridor and/or actively foraging for vital food sources. Grizzly bears and western toads have been identified as warranting special consideration at this time.

Grizzly Bear Migratory Trail Closures

In spring, grizzly bears descend from their winter dens into the Bonanza Creek corridor where they forage on new plant growth.

Trail sections may be closed at this time to minimize disturbance to the bears and to reduce the risk of human / bear encounters. These areas will be clearly marked by signage.

Closure dates will be determined and authorized by BC government biologists and will typically occur between mid-April and late June.

All conflicts with wildlife should be reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 or on-line at RAPP.com. Please also contact RBSTA at rbs.trailalliance@gmail.com

Western Toad Migratory Trail Closures

In spring, adult western toads migrate downslope to deposit and fertilize eggs in Summit Lake and then return upslope. In late summer and into the fall, young toadlets migrate from the lake into upland habitats to mature as adults.

Trail sections may be closed to minimize impacts on the small migrating toadlets which often remain stationary for periods of time and can be difficult to spot. These areas will be clearly marked by signage.

Closure dates will be determined and authorized by BC government biologists and will typically occur in late summer and into the fall.
